Brrrr!

The calendar doesn't say so yet, but it feels like winter is here. We had a little dusting of snow last night and the temps were maybe in the 20s or 30s.

Not too bad, but the wind made it feel really cold. Also the snow/sleet combination was stinging our faces while we were doing the chores yesterday evening. We've started feeding hay to the critters and I had to break the ice on the water tanks and buckets this morning.

I've been poring over the Uniquely Felt book I ordered. There's a ton of information in there. I thought I'd show you some of my latest wet felting projects. You may have seen this one in the sidebar already. It's listed in the shop...a cobweb felt Moebius scarf. It's made from Wensleydale wool, which has a long staple and is really wavy in cobweb felt. This was felted all in one piece with a half twist and no seams.

Next is a purse from Merino wool. The wool I used was already dyed in several different colors. The handle was supposed to felt on, but somehow that didn't work out and I just sewed the handle on.

Here's a vase covered in a thin layer of felt, along with a felted stone. This sounds silly, but I bought a package of decorative rocks at Wal-Mart to use. If you knew how many rocks we have around here, you'd understand why that sounds so silly. But these rocks were smooth, and Missouri rocks are not. You might find a smooth one now and then, but the majority are jagged and unusually shaped, not suited to felt around. Anyway, it would make an interesting paper weight, or you can just hold it. I'm not sure why, but the combination of the weight of the rock and the texture of the wool somehow just feels nice in your hand.

Then we have a felt-covered plastic egg, some swirl beads, and a vessel. The vessel started out to be a beret. I'm not sure why I decided to make a beret. They somehow don't seem to look right on me...but they looked so cute on the people in the book. Anyway, I used a flat resist and about four ounces of wool. There was a thin place in the seam and when I tried it on, it didn't look nearly as cute as it should have. So I decided to turn it into a bowl instead. I tossed it in the washer and gave it some good agitation and ta da!! An interestingly shaped bowl! I needle felted on some one-ply handspun for decoration.

I think I'll get a lot more good out of it as a bowl than as a hat!
