Plying with the Lazy Kate

In my post a few days ago, I showed you the lazy kate with bobbins ready for plying. Here's the result:

I thought it was actually a little harder to use than the built-in lazy kate on the wheel. It could just be that I'm new at it and need more practice. I had one bobbin on the top and one on the bottom. It might have been better if both bobbins had been on the bottom at the same level. It seemed as though sometimes they didn't quite turn exactly together.

I really like the colors in this yarn.

It was a Falkland wool dyed roving I bought from Fat Cat Knits on Etsy. There were about 140 yards as I wound it off the bobbin onto the niddy noddy. Of course, it will shrink up a fair amount when the twist is set. It should be listed in the shop soon! :)

Awwww, what a sweet-looking yarn. :)

Hehe, I find the spinning terminology so amusing! Lazy Kate, bobbin, niddy noddy... It's great! Maybe because English isn't my first language, I don't know. :)

Brenda, I just discovered your blog so you know why my comment comes so long after your orginal post. Does your new Lazy Kate have a way to tension the bobbins as you unwind while plying? I have the Schacht Lazy Kate which is similar in set up but it has a band that sits in the groves of the bobbin. The band can be tightened or loosened so that the bobbins feed evenly.

Karen, my Lazy Kate does have the tension band on it, but I'm wondering if I didn't have it tight enough. They didn't seem to turn quite together, but I was afraid if it was too tight, they would be hard to ply. More practice needed, maybe! :)
